for string orchestra
Duration 9 minutes.
Commissioned and premiered by the Orquestra de Cambra Terrassa 48 at the Terrassa Auditori, conducted by Quim Termens, on May 22nd, 2012.
Few months after my arrival to the United States, and while planning this piece commissioned by the Catalan ensemble Terrassa48 Chamber Orchestra, my grandaunt passed away at age 94. She was the last of her generation in our family and unfortunately I could not be present at her funeral. However, I managed to compose and record a little piece for strings dedicated to her, which was played back at the end of the service.
For several weeks I had her very present in my everyday life and I decided to let the music I wrote for her be part of my larger piece for strings. As a result, the intensity of the themes and textures I was composing inspired by my new life in New York are highly contrasting to the mood and feeling coming from the remembrance music.
