Tomàs Peire-Serrate, a Barcelona-born composer, has been based in Los Angeles since 2013. His music has earned international recognition, with performances across Europe, America, and Asia at esteemed venues and festivals such as Klang (Helsinki), Off Liceu (Barcelona), Rondo in Monferrato (Milan), Fundación Juan March (Madrid), Hear Now and Jacaranda (Los Angeles), Zodiac (Nice), Livorno Music Festival (Livorno), Re-Imagined (Hong Kong), and Chopin and Friends (New York). Tomàs has been honored with numerous awards, including the Antonin Dvorak Composition Competition (Czech Republic, 2010), American Composers' Orchestra (USA, 2018), New Vision Composition Competition (USA, 2019), Krzysztof Penderecki International Composers Competition Arboretum (Poland, 2019), Grand Prize at the iSing! Festival Composition Competition (China, 2020), 1st prize at the Mieczysław Karłowicz International Composers' Competition 2021 for his orchestral piece "Borealis," and the 2022 Left Coast Composition Contest for his song cycle “Five Haiku”.
In the summer of 2022, Tomàs premiered "The Queen, My Lord, Is Dead" in Los Angeles, a concert-length monodrama for soprano and ensemble, inspired by the character of Lady Macbeth. More recently, he debuted "Seny," a symphonic orchestral piece dedicated to his hometown orchestra, the Orquestra Simfònica de Sant Cugat. Additionally, in March 2023, in Madrid, he presented “Berlin 1927,” a musical response to Walther Ruttmann’s iconic 1927 film “Berlin, Symphony of a City,” scored for octet and commissioned by the prestigious Sonor Ensemble.
Currently, Tomàs is deeply engaged in several projects, including chamber music commissions for performances in Italy, France, and the US, and a new orchestral composition scheduled for premiere in March 2025 at Carnegie Hall in New York with the American Composers Orchestra. Furthermore, he has embarked on a large-scale opera project commissioned by the Gran Teatre del Liceu, one of Europe's oldest and most esteemed opera houses, set for the 2027-28 season in Barcelona.
Beyond his concert works, Tomàs has composed music for fiction and documentary feature films, as well as virtual reality (VR) experiences, and theater plays. His original compositions can be heard in projects such as “Vintage” (Spain, release fall 2024), "Love at Mariposa Beach" (US/Mexico), "Danger in the Spotlight" (US), “Muoi: the curse Returns” (Vietnam), "A Sister's Grudge" (US), "Next" (Spain/US), "The Prosecutors" (US), "Prism" (US), "The Anushree Experiments" (India), "Natalie_Net" (Spain), "Asleep" (China), "A Heavy Burden" (New York Times), and "FGM" (The Guardian), and "Life Without Matter" (UK). Additionally, as an orchestrator and arranger, he has played a vital role in shaping the music of popular films and shows including "Berlin" (Netflix), "Nowhere" (Netflix), “The Burial” (Amazon MGM), “Tequila Repasado” (Amazon), "Landscape With Invisible Hand" (MGM), "The English" (Amazon), "Allen v. Farrow" (HBO), "Minions" (Universal Pictures), "Love and Friendship" (Amazon Studios), "Watership Down" (BBC-Netflix), "32 Malasaña Street" (Warner Bros), "If I Stay" (New Line Cinema), "Chef's Table" (Netflix), and "American Masters" (PBS), among many others.
Tomàs began his musical journey by studying piano at the Sant Cugat Conservatory and composition at ESMUC in Barcelona. Seeking to further his compositional expertise, he ventured to Finland to pursue advanced studies at the renowned Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Continuing his quest while expanding horizons and life experiences, he moved to New York where he obtained a Masters of Music degree in Film Scoring from NYU, and subsequently earned a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. He has been invited to teach composition, orchestration, and related musical topics in universities such as UCLA, Pepperdine Malibu, and NYU in the USA and Universidad Loyola de Sevilla in Spain. Likewise, he has been guest speaker to conferences and workshops, as well as chair international composition competitions.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Tomàs has been the Associate Artistic Director for the Du Vert a L'infini Music Festival in Besançon, France, since its inception in 2019. This position reflects his commitment to fostering musical excellence and promoting cultural exchange on an international scale.
